The Cambarus bartonii is a type of crayfish found in eastern North America. People often call it the common crayfish or Appalachian brook crayfish.
About the Common Crayfish
This crayfish was the first one from North America to be officially described by scientists. A scientist named Johan Christian Fabricius wrote about it in 1798. He gave it the name Astacus bartonii. Scientists believe he found the first one near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Where It Lives
The common crayfish likes to live in cool, fast-moving streams with lots of rocks. It can also be found in shallow lakes. You can find this crayfish in Canada, in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. In the United States, it lives from Maine all the way down to Alabama. In the southern parts of its home range, it mostly lives in the Appalachian Mountains and the hills nearby.
What It Looks Like
Most common crayfish are a plain dark brown color. Sometimes, you might see them with a slightly spotted or "mottled" pattern. Some also have a special saddle-shaped mark on their back.
Its Conservation Status
The Cambarus bartonii crayfish is listed as a species of "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List. This means that scientists believe it is not currently in danger of disappearing.
