Cambrai is a small town in South Australia. It is found on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges, right next to the River Marne.

This town was originally called Rhine Villa. During World War I, many places in Australia that had German names were changed. This was done to remove any connection to Germany. So, Rhine Villa was renamed Cambrai after a famous battle in the war called the Battle of Cambrai.

About Cambrai

Cambrai is a quiet town with a small population. In 2016, about 289 people lived there. It is located about 70 kilometers from Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.

What is a Bounded Locality?

A "bounded locality" is like an official area that includes a main town and the land around it. The bounded locality of Cambrai is bigger than just the town itself. It includes other areas that used to be separate.

Rheinthal's History

One of these areas is called Rheinthal. It used to be a small community about 3 kilometers north of Cambrai. Rheinthal had its own Lutheran church and a school.

During World War I, all schools that taught in German were closed down. So, the Rheinthal school was closed in 1916. It reopened for a while in 1935 but then closed for good in 1955.

Natural Beauty and Other Areas

The Cambrai bounded locality also includes the Marne Valley Conservation Park. This is a special area set aside to protect nature. You can find beautiful plants and animals there.

Another area included is Kongolia, which is east of the town. Kongolia was once known as Rhine Park.

Transport and Railways

Cambrai was once an important stop on the Sedan railway line. A railway line is a track for trains. From 1964 until the 1980s, Cambrai was the "terminus" of this line. A terminus is the very last station on a railway line. This meant trains would arrive at Cambrai and then turn around to go back.
