Sedan is a small country town in South Australia. It is located about 100 kilometres east of Adelaide. This is the capital city of South Australia. Sedan is also about 20 kilometres west of the Murray River. The town sits on the dry eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Discovering Sedan's Past

Sedan has a rich history. It was once the end point for the South Australian Railways' Sedan train line. This line opened on October 13, 1919. Later, in 1964, the line was shortened to end at Cambrai.

Roads and Routes

Sedan is an important meeting point for roads. The Stott Highway connects the Barossa Valley in the west to the River Murray and Riverland areas in the east. Also, Halfway House Road crosses through Sedan. This road is a key route for large trucks traveling north and south. It links the Sturt Highway and Princes Highway on the plains east of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Historic Buildings and Settlers

The town of Sedan is surrounded by old dry-stone walls. These walls were built by the first settlers. Many buildings from the 1800s are still in great shape here. You can learn more about the town's history by following the Sedan Heritage Trail. You can get a map for this trail from the Sedan Hotel.

Sedan was a busy railway town in the past. It even had a steam flour mill and a factory that made farm machines. German settlers first came to Sedan in the 1850s. The town was originally a private area of land. It was named after the Battle of Sedan from the Franco-Prussian War.

Local Government

In 1933, different local councils joined together to form the District Council of Keyneton and Swan Reach. Sedan was chosen as the main office for this new council. Later, the council's name was changed to the District Council of Sedan to show where its main office was located.

Pine Hut Creek Area

Pine Hut Creek and Pine Hut Plain are old names for areas south of Sedan. The creek flows from the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges all the way to the Murray River. There used to be a church school here, which closed in 1880. A government school also operated from 1900 to 1910. There is a small cemetery in the area, but it is no longer used.
