Camelback Mountain, also known as Big Pocono, is a special place in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Even though it's called a mountain, it's actually part of a large, flat area called the Pocono Plateau. From most sides, it looks like a mountain, but if you look from the west, you'll see it's almost level with the land around it.

What is the Pocono Plateau?

The Pocono Plateau is a unique landform. It was shaped by huge sheets of ice called glaciers. These glaciers moved across the land many times, scraping it flat. This created the plateau we see today. The glaciers also left behind other interesting features, like swamps and bogs. These formed in low spots where water collected. For example, Deep Lake and Wolf Swamp near Big Pocono State Park were made this way.

Why Does it Look Like a Mountain?

Camelback Mountain has a very distinct shape. It rises about 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the land to its south, east, and north. This makes it easy to spot from those directions. However, if you are looking from the west, it doesn't stand out as much. This is because the land to the west is also part of the high plateau.

Fun Things to Do at Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain is a popular spot for outdoor fun. It is home to the Camelback Mountain Resort, which is a well-known ski area.

Big Pocono State Park

At the very top of Camelback Mountain, you'll find Big Pocono State Park. This park is a great place to visit. It has many hiking trails where you can explore nature. There are also picnic tables, perfect for a family lunch outdoors.

Amazing Views

From the top of Camelback Mountain, you can see for miles on a clear day. You might even spot the Delaware Water Gap, a famous water gap in the mountains. You can also see High Point (New Jersey) in New Jersey and the Catskill Mountains in New York State. It's a fantastic place to enjoy the scenery!
