A Look Back in Time: Candelaria's History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it.
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. They found that Candelaria barrio had 1,395 people living there at that time. Over the years, the population grew quite a lot, as you can see in the table below.
