First Climb to the Top

The first people known to climb to the very top of Cantata Peak were Dave Johnston and Karen Courtright. They reached the summit on August 26, 1967.

Where is Cantata Peak Located?

This mountain is found within Chugach State Park. It is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of downtown Anchorage. Another mountain, Eagle Peak, is about 1.83 miles (2.95 kilometers) to the west-southwest.

Why the Name "Cantata"?

The name "Cantata Peak" was officially chosen in 1968 by the United States Geological Survey. Karen Courtright, one of the first climbers, suggested this name. She wanted it to match the musical theme of the area.

Within three miles (about 5 kilometers) of Cantata Peak, you can find other places with music-themed names. These include Symphony Lake, Concerto Peak, Flute Peak, Triangle Peak, Organ Mountain, Calliope Mountain, and Hurdygurdy Mountain.

Weather at Cantata Peak

Cantata Peak has a subarctic climate. This means it has cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Temperatures can drop very low, sometimes below −20 °C (which is −4 °F). With wind, it can feel even colder.

The best time to try climbing Cantata Peak is usually in May and June. During these months, the weather is often more favorable for outdoor activities. Any rain or melting snow from the peak flows into streams that lead to the Eagle River.
