You can find it south of Woodside, north of Felton, and east of Viola.
A Look Back: Canterbury's History
Canterbury got its name from a famous city in England, also called Canterbury. Long ago, this small community in Delaware was a very important stop for travelers.
Stagecoach Stop
Canterbury was a key spot for stagecoaches. These were like old-time buses pulled by horses. They traveled up and down the Delmarva Peninsula. At Canterbury, stagecoaches would stop so that tired horses could be swapped out for fresh ones. This helped people and goods travel faster and more smoothly.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Canterbury has changed a lot.
- In 1890, about 160 people lived there.
- By 1900, the population grew slightly to 162.
- But by 1960, only 23 people called Canterbury home.
This shows how small communities can grow and shrink over many years!
