Cape Carteret is a town located on the southern coast of North Carolina, in Carteret County. It's part of the United States. The town was officially started in 1959. According to the 2020 census, about 2,224 people live there.
Where is Cape Carteret?
Cape Carteret is in the western part of Carteret County. To the north, you'll find Petrified Creek and the Croatan National Forest. To the east is the town of Bogue, and to the west is Cedar Point.
South of Cape Carteret is Bogue Sound. Across the sound is the town of Emerald Isle. A bridge called the B. Cameron Langston Bridge connects Cape Carteret to Emerald Isle. This bridge carries North Carolina Highway 58.
You can take Highway 58 north about 15 miles (24 km) to reach U.S. Route 17 at Maysville. North Carolina Highway 24 goes east about 20 miles (32 km) to Morehead City. If you go west on Highway 24, it's about 22 miles (35 km) to Jacksonville.
The town of Cape Carteret covers a total area of about 2.6 square miles (6.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.5 square miles (6.4 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers), is water.
