Cape Farrar (which is Cap d'Farrar in French) is a piece of land that sticks out into the ocean. It's located in Nunavut, a large territory in northern Canada. This cape is part of the Boothia Peninsula, close to a community called Taloyoak. It's about 2,900 kilometers northwest of Ottawa, Canada's capital city.

Where is Cape Farrar?

Cape Farrar is found in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. To its west, the James Ross Strait and the St. Roch Basin separate the cape and the Boothia Peninsula from King William Island. The small community of Taloyoak is located to the northeast of the cape.

Who was Cape Farrar named after?

Cape Farrar is named after a brave man named Sergeant Frederick Sleigh Farrar. He was a member of the RCMP, Canada's national police force.

Sergeant Farrar's Early Life

Frederick Sleigh Farrar was born in Liverpool, England. In 1929, he moved to Canada. He had been a cadet in the Royal Navy, which is the navy of the United Kingdom. When he arrived in Canada, he joined the RCMP in the same year.

Adventures on the St. Roch

Sergeant Farrar spent more than 10 years working on a special ship called the RCMPV St. Roch. This ship was famous for its amazing journeys. Farrar was part of the first crew to sail all the way around the North American continent. They did this by traveling through the Northwest Passage, a sea route through the Arctic. He served as the skipper, or captain, alongside Inspector Henry Larsen, who was a famous Arctic explorer.

A Book About Arctic Journeys

Sergeant Farrar wrote a book about his incredible adventures. It was called Arctic Assignment: The Story of the St. Roch. The book was published shortly after he passed away in 1955.
