Capitanejo is a special place in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It's one of the 31 areas called barrios in the city. Capitanejo is unique because it's a coastal barrio, meaning it's right by the sea! It's also a rural area, so it has a lot of open space and nature. It was officially started way back in 1822.

Capitanejo is one of nine barrios that border other towns. It touches the municipality of Juana Diaz. It's also one of five coastal barrios in Ponce, along with Playa, Bucana, Vayas and Canas.

Where is Capitanejo?

Capitanejo is located in the southeastern part of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It's a rural area right on the coast, southeast of the main city of Ponce. The name "Capitanejo" comes from a word that means a junior leader or commander. This area started as a community of tobacco growers around the 1680s.
