Capitanejo is a special place in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It's one of the 31 areas called barrios in the city. Capitanejo is unique because it's a coastal barrio, meaning it's right by the sea! It's also a rural area, so it has a lot of open space and nature. It was officially started way back in 1822.
Capitanejo is one of nine barrios that border other towns. It touches the municipality of Juana Diaz. It's also one of five coastal barrios in Ponce, along with Playa, Bucana, Vayas and Canas.

Where is Capitanejo?
Capitanejo is located in the southeastern part of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It's a rural area right on the coast, southeast of the main city of Ponce. The name "Capitanejo" comes from a word that means a junior leader or commander. This area started as a community of tobacco growers around the 1680s.
What are Capitanejo's Borders?
Capitanejo has clear natural borders.
- To the north, it's bordered by the Río Inabón river and the Sabana Llana barrio of Juana Díaz.
- To the south, it meets the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
- To the west, it's bordered by the Río Inabón river.
- To the east, it's bordered by the Río Jacaguas river.
When looking at its borders with other barrios in Ponce:
- It borders barrio Vayas to the north and west.
- To the south, it's the Caribbean Sea.
- To the east, it borders Sabana Llana and a barrio also named Capitanejo, both in the municipality of Juana Díaz. This makes it special because it's the only barrio in Ponce that borders a barrio with the same name in another town!

Capitanejo covers about 3.95 square miles (10.2 km2) of land and 0.88 square miles (2.3 km2) of water. In 2010, about 1,011 people lived there. This means there were about 257 people per square mile. The main roads that go through Capitanejo are PR-1 and PR-510.
Cool Facts About Capitanejo
Capitanejo has the second shortest coastline among all five of Ponce's coastal barrios. Only Bucaná has a shorter coastline.
