Caraway's History
The town of Caraway started in 1912. It was first a place where people cut down trees for wood, called White Switch. In 1923, it officially became a town. It was named after Thaddeus Caraway, who was a U.S. Senator at that time.
Geography and Nature
Caraway is in a flat area of Arkansas known as the Arkansas Delta. This region is mostly flat land. According to the United States Census Bureau, Caraway covers about 6.0 square kilometers (2.3 square miles) of land.
Caraway is part of a natural area called the St. Francis Lowlands. This area is mostly flat and used for farming today. You can still see some sandy spots and sunken lands from big earthquakes that happened in 1811 and 1812. Many rivers and streams here have been changed to flow in straight paths. This has caused some loss of homes for water animals and plants along the riverbanks. The St. Francis Sunken Lands Wildlife Management Area is a protected area nearby. It helps save some of the natural forests that used to cover this region.
