Carex nervina is a type of plant called a sedge. It's often known as the Sierra sedge because it grows in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Where Sierra Sedge Grows
This special sedge plant naturally lives in California. You can find it in places like the Sierra Nevada mountains and the San Joaquin Valley. It also grows in nearby parts of Oregon and Nevada. The Sierra sedge especially likes to grow in wet, open areas called mountain meadows.
What Sierra Sedge Looks Like
The Sierra sedge, Carex nervina, grows in thick groups. Its stems are soft and have small "wings" on them. These stems can grow to be about 70 centimeters (about 28 inches) tall.
Flowers and Fruit
The plant's inflorescence is its flower part. For the Sierra sedge, this is a tight group of small, spiky flower clusters. Each cluster can be up to 3 centimeters (about 1 inch) long. After the flowers, the plant makes fruit. This fruit is covered by a shiny, green or brown case. This case is called a perigynium and has small teeth along its edge.
