Carina Massone Negrone was a brave Italian aviator. She was born in Bogliasco, Italy, on June 20, 1911, and passed away there on March 19, 1991. Many people remember her as one of the very first "heroines of the sky" because of her amazing flying achievements.

About Carina Negrone

Carina married Ambrogio Negrone and they had a son named Vittorio. In 1933, she made history by becoming the first Italian woman to get a pilot's license. She earned it from the Royal National Aeronautical Union (RUNA).

Carina loved sports like swimming, skiing, and tennis. But she loved flying the most! At that time, flying was mostly done by men. It was seen as a very "manly" activity.

Breaking Records

On May 5, 1934, Carina set her first personal record. She flew a special seaplane up to 5,544 meters (about 18,189 feet). This was a great achievement!

After this, her friend Italo Balbo encouraged her. Carina decided to try and break the world record for altitude. The record was held by Maryse Hilsz, who had flown to 11,289 meters (about 37,037 feet). To get ready, Carina trained as an air force pilot. She trained at the Guidonia Montecelio airport.

On June 20, 1935, Carina took off from Guidonia Montecelio. She was flying a Caproni biplane. This plane had a powerful Pegasus 1110 engine. She brought a heated jacket and an oxygen tank to help her at high altitudes.

Doctors thought she might not be able to fly higher than 11,000 meters. This was because the air gets very thin and cold up high. It could be as cold as -35 °C! But Carina was determined. Even though she felt a bit dizzy, she kept going. She reached an amazing 12,043 meters (39,402 feet)! This broke Maryse Hilsz's record by 754 meters (about 2,474 feet).

Carina's record for that type of propeller-powered plane still stands today!

More Achievements

Carina went on to set 7 more world flying records. Her last record was on June 19, 1954. She flew from Brescia, Italy, all the way to Luxor, Egypt. This was a distance of 2,987 kilometers (about 1,856 miles). She did it in 13 hours and 34 minutes, flying at an average speed of 299 kilometers per hour (about 186 mph).

In 1951, she took part in an aerial tour of Algeria. She flew with Ada Marchelli in a Macchi monoplane. Carina also competed in many international flying competitions. Later, she even started her own pilot school!

To honor her, Poste Italiane (the Italian postal service) issued a special commemorative stamp in 1996. It had a value of L. 750. Also, a square in her hometown of Bogliasco is named after Carina Negrone.
