Cariquima is a small town located high up in the mountains of Chile. You can find it in the Tarapacá Region, just a few kilometers south of Colchane. The town sits on the slopes of a mountain called Nevado Cariquima, also known as Mama Huanapa.
Cariquima is a very important meeting place for the Aymara people, who are an indigenous community. The town has useful services like a clinic and a school. It also has electricity during the afternoons and even an airport, which was built by the Chilean Air Force in 2003.
The church in Cariquima is the oldest building in the town. It became a historical monument in 2006. There is also a river flowing nearby.
A Look at Its Past
We don't know exactly where the name "Cariquima" came from. Every year, on November 24, the town celebrates its main patron, San Juan. This is a big celebration!
When Spanish people came to Chile a long time ago, they brought the Catholic religion. Many people in Cariquima follow the Catholic faith. However, almost half of the people in Cariquima are also Pentecostal, which is another type of Christian belief.
