Carl August Berthold Schuhmann was an amazing German athlete. He was born on May 12, 1869, and passed away on March 24, 1946. At the very first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, he won four gold medals! This made him the most successful athlete at those Games. He was a champion in both gymnastics and wrestling. He also competed in weightlifting.
Carl Schuhmann's Olympic Journey
Carl Schuhmann was part of the German gymnastics team. This team was very successful at the 1896 Olympics. They won gold medals in the team events for the horizontal bar and parallel bars. Carl also won a third gold medal on his own. He was the best in the horse vault event. He also competed in other gymnastics events like the pommel horse and rings.
Wrestling Gold Medal
After his gymnastics success, Carl Schuhmann entered the wrestling competition. Even though he was smaller and lighter than most other wrestlers, he won the gold medal! In his first match, he faced Launceston Elliot from Great Britain. Elliot had just won a gold medal in weightlifting. Carl won this match easily.
In the final match, Carl wrestled against Georgios Tsitas from Greece. Their match lasted 40 minutes! It got too dark to continue, so the match was stopped. They finished it the next morning. Carl quickly won the bout, earning another gold medal.
Other Sports
Carl Schuhmann was a very versatile athlete. He also took part in the Olympic weightlifting competition. He placed fourth in the two-handed weightlifting event, lifting 90 kilograms.
He also competed in track and field events. He was one of nine athletes in the long jump. He also placed fifth in the triple jump. Carl even tried the shot put competition.
Later Life
In 1936, Carl Schuhmann was part of a gymnastics show. This show took place at the Olympic Stadium. His tombstone has the five Olympic Rings on it. It also says "Germany’s first Olympic champion" and "Athens 1896".
