Carl Wunsch was a very important scientist who studied the ocean. He was a professor of Physical Oceanography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) until he retired in 2013. He is well-known for his early studies on internal waves, which are waves that move inside the ocean, not just on the surface. More recently, he researched how the ocean's currents affect Earth's climate.

Carl Wunsch's Career
Carl Wunsch earned his highest degree, a Ph.D., in Geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966. Geophysics is the study of Earth using physics. He started teaching at MIT in 1967. By 1970, he became a tenured professor, meaning he had a permanent teaching position. In 1976, he was named the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physical Oceanography, a special title for his work.
Carl Wunsch and Climate Science
Carl Wunsch was interviewed for a documentary about climate change. However, he later said that his ideas were not shown correctly in the film. He felt that his words were used in a way that changed their original meaning. This shows how important it is to understand the full context when watching documentaries or news.
