Carlos Manuel Bocanegra, born on May 25, 1979, is an American sports leader and a former professional soccer player. He was a fantastic defender who played in many countries like England, Scotland, France, and Spain. Carlos was named the best defender in Major League Soccer (MLS) twice! He also played over 100 games for the U.S. National Team and was their captain for six years. After he stopped playing, he worked as a technical director and vice president for Atlanta United.

Carlos's Early Life and Education
Carlos Bocanegra was born in Upland, California, on May 25, 1979. He grew up in Alta Loma, Rancho Cucamonga, California. Carlos went to Alta Loma High School. His brother, Diego, also played soccer in college. Their father is from Mexico.
While at UCLA, Carlos studied history and geography. He was offered scholarships to play American football, but he chose soccer instead. He wanted to make soccer his career. In 2013, Carlos was honored and added to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
Carlos's Club Soccer Career
Carlos Bocanegra played for several soccer clubs around the world. He started his professional journey in the United States.
Playing for Chicago Fire
After playing college soccer at UCLA, Carlos joined Major League Soccer. The Chicago Fire picked him in the 2000 draft. He quickly became one of the best defenders in the league.
- In 2000, he won the MLS Rookie of the Year Award.
- His team, the Fire, reached the MLS Championship game.

In January 2004, Carlos joined Fulham, a team in England. Fans loved him and called him "the Jackal" or "the Black Snake." He mostly played as a center back. Sometimes, he played as a left back or even a defensive midfielder.

Carlos Bocanegra played for the U.S. National Team for many years.
- He played for the U.S. at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship.

- He became a key player for the team in 2003.
- Carlos played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He started two games as a left back.
- He became the first-choice captain for the U.S. team under coach Bob Bradley.
