Carlos José Castilho (born November 27, 1927 – died February 2, 1987) was a very famous Brazilian goalkeeper in football. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Castilho played for the club Fluminense for many years, from 1947 to 1964. He also played for the Brazilian national team.

He was part of Brazil's team in four World Cups: 1950, 1954, 1958, and 1962. He helped Brazil win the World Cup twice, in 1958 and 1962! Even though he was on the team for four World Cups, he only played in three games, all during the 1954 tournament.

Castilho was known for making incredible saves that seemed impossible. Fans of opposing teams called him "Leiteria," which means "lucky man," because he seemed to have so much good luck. Fluminense supporters called him "Saint Castilho" because he was so good.

He had a special condition called color blindness. He said this helped him see yellow balls as if they were red, which he thought gave him an advantage. However, he found it hard to see white balls at night.

Who Was Carlos Castilho?

Carlos Castilho was one of Brazil's most legendary football players. He was a goalkeeper, which means his job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. He spent most of his career playing for one club, Fluminense.

A Goalkeeper with Special Vision

Castilho was unique because he was colorblind. This meant he saw colors differently from most people. He believed this condition actually helped him as a goalkeeper. He said he saw yellow footballs as if they were red. This might have made them stand out more for him during games. However, he did have trouble seeing white balls clearly when playing at night.

Playing for Fluminense

Carlos Castilho played for Fluminense from 1947 to 1964. This was a very long time to play for one club! He became a true legend there. He played in 699 games for Fluminense, which is a club record. No other player has played more games for them.

Amazing Records at Fluminense

During his time with Fluminense, Castilho helped his team win 420 games. He also managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in 255 games. These are called "clean sheets." Both of these numbers are individual records in Fluminense's history. He truly was a fantastic goalkeeper for them.

World Cup Hero

Castilho was a key part of the Brazilian national team during a golden age. He was selected for four World Cup squads. This shows how highly he was rated by the national coaches. Being part of a World Cup team is a huge honor for any player.
