Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 14th Duke of Alba (born May 19, 1794 – died October 7, 1835) was an important Spanish nobleman. He held many high-ranking titles, including being a Grandee of Spain, which meant he was one of the most powerful people in the country.

Life Story of Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart

Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1794. His family was very old and famous. He was a descendant of James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick. This means he was related to King James II of England and VII of Scotland, who had been exiled from his country.

Carlos Miguel was the second son of the 5th Duke of Berwick. When his older brother, the 6th Duke, passed away in 1795, Carlos Miguel inherited his family's titles. He was also honored as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece of Spain. This was a very special award given to important people.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1819, Carlos Miguel married an Italian noblewoman named Rosalia Ventimiglia di Grammonte y Moncada. She was from a powerful family in Palermo, Italy.

Carlos Miguel became the 14th Duke of Alba in 1802. This happened after the 13th Duchess of Alba died without any children. Becoming the Duke of Alba was a huge deal. It meant he became a Grandee of Spain ten times over, showing his great importance and wealth.

Carlos Miguel and Rosalia had three children:

  • Jacopo Fitz-James Stuart y Ventimiglia (1821–1881). He later married Maria Francisca Portocarrero Palafox y Kirkpatrick. She was the older sister of Eugénie de Montijo, who became the wife of Emperor Napoleon III of France.
  • Enrique Fitz-James Stuart y Ventimiglia (1826–1882). He held the title of Count of Galve.
  • Luis Fernando FitzJames-Stuart y Ventimiglia.

Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart passed away at the age of 41. He died on October 7, 1835, in Sion, Switzerland. His oldest son then became the next Duke of Alba.
