Carlos Augusto de Mascarenhas Relvas de Campos (born November 13, 1838 – died January 23, 1894), known simply as Carlos Relvas, was a very important person in Portugal. He was a wealthy landowner and a great sportsman. He is best known as a talented amateur bullfighter and as a pioneer of photography in Portugal. This means he was one of the first people to do photography in a big way there.

The Life of Carlos Relvas
Carlos Relvas was born in a beautiful home called Outeiro Palace. This was in Golegã, a small village in the countryside of Portugal. His family was very rich. His father, José Farinha Relvas de Campos, owned a lot of land. Carlos learned many things from private teachers. He studied science and foreign languages, especially French.
Carlos Relvas inherited a huge amount of money and land from his parents. But he was always known for being very kind and charitable. He often helped others.
Carlos Relvas: A Photography Pioneer
Carlos Relvas loved art and soon became interested in photography. In 1876, he built a fancy studio on one of his properties in Golegã. He bought the newest cameras and equipment from all over Europe. His photographs became very famous and valuable in Portugal. Soon, Carlos Relvas was considered the best amateur photographer in the country.
He became a member of the Société française de photographie, which is a famous French photography group. Many of his photos were shown in exhibitions. These shows happened both in Portugal and in other countries. He won many awards for his amazing work:

Carlos Relvas: The Sportsman
Carlos Relvas was also a notable sportsman. He was a perfect gentleman-rider. This means he was very skilled at horse riding. He was also a good marksman (shooting) and fencer (sword fighting).
He became a famous amateur bullfighter. He fought both on horseback, as a cavaleiro, and on foot, as a bandarilheiro. He loved the sport so much that he built a bullring in Golegã. He often took part in bullfighting shows to raise money for charity. For example, the money from the first show at his Golegã arena went to the local hospital. His last performance, in 1893, helped people who were affected by a big hurricane in the Azores.
Family Life
In 1853, when he was 15, Carlos Relvas married D. Margarida Amália Mendes de Vasconcelos. Her family was very important in Portugal. They had four children together. Their most famous child was José Relvas. José became a republican politician. He was part of the 5 October 1910 revolution in Portugal. He even served as the country's Prime Minister for a short time in 1919.
Carlos Relvas's first wife died in 1887. A year later, he married Mariana Correia. This marriage was not fully accepted by his family. The couple moved into Carlos Relvas's old photography studio, which they turned into a house. They lived there until Carlos Relvas passed away on January 23, 1894. He died after getting a serious infection called sepsis following a horse-riding accident.
