History of Carmen
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Carmen's Early Population Count
After the war, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of all the people living there. This count is called a census. The census found that 784 people lived in Carmen barrio at that time.
