Carmen Martín Gaite (born December 8, 1925 – died July 23, 2000) was a famous Spanish writer. She wrote many novels, short stories, movie scripts, and essays. Her books won many important awards. She won the Premio Nadal in 1957 for her book Entre visillos. Later, she also won the Prince of Asturias Award in 1988. These awards show how important her writing was.

Early Life and Family
Carmen Martín Gaite was born on December 8, 1925, in Salamanca, Spain. She was the second daughter of José Martín López and María Gaite Veloso. Her father was a notary. Her mother's family came from Orense.
Her grandfather was a geography professor. Her great-uncle started a cultural center and ran a newspaper. These family members loved learning and writing.
The family spent summers on a farm near Orense. These trips helped Carmen feel connected to Galicia. This connection later inspired some of her books, like Las ataduras.
Education and Literary Beginnings
Carmen grew up in Salamanca. Her father wanted her to have a good education. She was taught at home by private teachers and her father. He loved history and literature.
The Spanish Civil War changed her school plans. She finished high school at the Women's School Institute of Salamanca. This school later appeared in her novel Entre visillos. Her teachers there were important writers. They helped her want to become a writer herself.
In 1943, she studied philosophy at the University of Salamanca. There, she met other future writers. Her first poems were published in a magazine. She also enjoyed acting in plays.
In 1946, she got a scholarship to study in Portugal. She learned more about Portuguese and Galician culture.
Moving to Madrid and Writing Career
After finishing her degree in 1948, Carmen moved to Madrid. She planned to write a Ph.D. thesis. In Madrid, she met many other young writers. They were part of a group called the Generation of '50.
She married another writer, Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio. They were both important figures in Spanish literature.
