About Caroona Creek Conservation Park

This park was officially created on February 18, 2010. It was set up under a law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. The park gets its name from Caroona Creek, a stream that flows through the area. The name was approved in 2005. More land was added to the park in 2014. As of 2016, the park covers about 54.22 square kilometers (20.93 square miles).

Protecting the Land

When the park was created, special rules were made. These rules allowed certain activities like mining to continue in the area. This was done under laws like the Mining Act 1971. This means that while the land is protected, some existing activities can still happen.

Exploring the Park

The famous Heysen Trail passes through Caroona Creek Conservation Park. This is a very long walking trail. In the park, the trail forms a loop. It enters from the south and then leaves the park in the west. This makes it a great spot for hikers to explore.

What Makes it Special?

In 2011, the people who manage the park described it beautifully. They said it's on the western edge of the Olary Plain. The park has many different types of land. You can see steep, rocky ridges and hills made of a material called calcrete. These areas then lead to flat plains where rivers have left soil.

The park is important because it protects a unique area. It's where the gentle hills of the Mid North region meet the start of the rugged Flinders Ranges. The northern part of the park is home to the stunning Tourilie Gorge. This gorge is surrounded by rough, hilly land.

How it's Classified

Caroona Creek Conservation Park is known as an IUCN Category VI protected area. This means it's a protected area where people can use natural resources in a sustainable way. It's about balancing conservation with careful use of the land.
