Hallett is a small town in the Mid North region of South Australia. It is located on the Barrier Highway. The town is about 32 kilometers (20 miles) north of Burra. It is also about 38 kilometers (24 miles) south-east of Jamestown.
Hallett is very close to a special boundary called Goyder's Line. This line was drawn in the 1800s by George Goyder. It helped farmers know which land was best for growing crops and which was better for grazing animals.

The Story of Hallett
The town of Hallett was named after John Hallett. He was an important person who helped settle the area. He was also a politician. The town was planned on his property, which was called "Willogoleechee." The first pieces of land in Hallett were sold on July 7, 1870. Another place, Hallett Cove, was also named after him.
Hallett's Past and Present
Hallett used to be a busy railway stop for local farmers. Today, the town has a General Store where you can get fuel. There is also the Wildongoleechie Hotel, which has been open since 1868. Another hotel, the Unicorn Hotel, was around in the 1870s, but it is no longer there.
Churches in Hallett
The Good Shepherd Catholic Church used to be the Hallett Freemasons Lodge. This lodge was once the second-smallest in South Australia. It closed in 1978. The Catholic Church bought the building in 1980. The building is still there, but it is no longer a church. It was sold in 2023 and is now a private home.
The Uniting Church, which was once the Methodist Church, opened in 1928. There was also a third church, St Catherine of Sienna Anglican Church. It opened in 1957 and closed in 2003.
The Railway Line
Hallett was once on the broad gauge Roseworthy-Peterborough railway line. This railway line was closed down. The tracks were removed in the early 1990s.
Historic Places
The historic Cappeedee Homestead and Woolshed is a very important site. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it is a protected place because of its history.
Famous Connections
Hallett is the closest town to Mount Bryan East. This is the birthplace of Sir Hubert Wilkins. He was a famous explorer, bird expert, pilot, soldier, geographer, and photographer. He lived from 1888 to 1958. Many people consider him one of the last great modern explorers.
Sir Hubert Wilkins' childhood home, Netfield, has been restored. It is now a historic site that you can visit. It is easy to reach from the Mount Dare Driving Circuit, which is between Hallett and Terowie.
Hallett is also on the Heysen Trail. This is a very long walking path that goes through many beautiful parts of South Australia.
