Carraízo's Past: A Brief History

Carraízo Dam and Loíza Lake: Water for the City

One of the most important features in Carraízo is the Loíza Lake. This lake is actually a reservoir, which is like a giant storage tank for water. It was created when the Carraízo Dam was built across the Río Grande de Loíza river.

Why Loíza Lake is Important

Loíza Lake is super important because it provides most of the drinking water for the San Juan metropolitan area. This includes the capital city of San Juan and its surrounding towns. So, many people rely on this lake for their daily water supply.

"Carraízo" in Everyday Talk

Did you know that the name "Carraízo" is used in a special way in Puerto Rican Spanish? People sometimes use it as a polite way to say a stronger word.

A Common Puerto Rican Expression

For example, the phrase "anda pa'l Carraízo" is a common expression. It's like saying "go to heck" or "buzz off" in English. It's considered a mild phrase, so it's okay to use it even in polite conversations. This expression has also become popular in the Dominican Republic, likely because of the close connections between the two islands.
