Casey Bailey's Hockey Journey
Early Years and College Hockey
When Casey was young, he played in a big international hockey tournament called the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 2004. He played for a team from Alaska.
Before college, Bailey played junior hockey for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the British Columbia Hockey League from 2009 to 2012. After that, he went to play college hockey at Penn State University. In his junior year (2014–15), he was one of the top scorers in the Big Ten Conference. He finished his college career with 45 goals and 80 points in 96 games.
Joining the NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs
Casey Bailey was not chosen in the NHL Entry Draft, which is how most players join the NHL. However, the Toronto Maple Leafs saw his talent and signed him to a two-year contract on March 21, 2015. This was a huge moment because he became the first Penn State player to sign an NHL contract and play in the league.
Many other NHL teams were interested in Bailey. He had even practiced with the Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames before. He almost signed with the Buffalo Sabres, but they couldn't agree on terms.
Bailey played his first NHL game on March 26, 2015, against the Florida Panthers. He scored his first NHL goal in his very last game of that season, on April 11, 2015, against famous goalie Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens.
Time with the Ottawa Senators
For the 2015–16 season, Bailey played mostly for the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs' minor league team in the American Hockey League (AHL). He scored 18 points in 38 games.
In February 2016, Casey was part of a big trade that sent him to the Ottawa Senators organization. He finished that season playing for the Senators' AHL team, the Binghamton Senators. He scored 7 goals and 21 points in 30 games there.
On July 1, 2016, Bailey signed another contract with the Ottawa Senators. He spent most of the 2016–17 season with the Binghamton Senators. He was called up to play for Ottawa a few times, playing 7 NHL games that season. He was also the only player from Binghamton chosen for the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic, which is a big honor!
Playing in Other Leagues
After his time with the Senators, Bailey tried out for the New York Islanders in 2017. He didn't get a contract with them but signed a one-year AHL contract with their minor league team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He had a good season there, scoring 18 goals and 41 points.
In 2018, Casey decided to play hockey overseas. He signed with HC Slovan Bratislava in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), which is a major league in Europe and Asia. He played 45 games there, scoring 1 goal and 5 points.
Bailey returned to North America in 2019 and played a few games in the AHL and ECHL (another minor league). He then went back to Europe.
Playing in Europe: Sweden and Germany
In 2019, Casey signed with the Växjö Lakers in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), Sweden's top league. He played 28 games, scoring 7 goals and 11 points. The playoffs that year were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, Bailey moved to Germany and signed with the Iserlohn Roosters in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He played three seasons with the Roosters, scoring many goals and points. For example, in the 2020–21 season, he had 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points in 37 games.
After three successful seasons with Iserlohn, Bailey signed a one-year deal with ERC Ingolstadt, another team in the DEL, on May 22, 2023. He played for them during the 2023-24 season.
