A Look Back: Cashton's History
Cashton started as a small stop for travelers way back in 1854. A man named Thompson Hazen opened an inn at a busy spot on a stagecoach road. This road connected important towns like Prairie du Chien and Black River Falls, Wisconsin. People called this place Hazen's Corners.
Things really changed in 1879 when a railroad came through. The Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad built a special train line connecting Sparta to Viroqua, Wisconsin. This new train line brought more people to the area.
That same year, a local businessman named William H. H. Cash helped build a train station. He also planned out the village, giving it a new name: Cashton, after himself!
Since the late 1960s, many Amish farmers have moved to the countryside around Cashton. Today, it's the largest Amish settlement in all of Wisconsin.
