Castleton (which is Cas-bach in Welsh) is a small village, also known as a hamlet, located in the city of Newport in South Wales. It's a quiet place with a few important buildings and good transport links.
Where is Castleton?
Castleton is part of the Marshfield area. It sits right on the A48 main road, which is a dual carriageway (meaning it has two lanes going in each direction). This road connects the city of Newport to the east and Cardiff to the west. So, Castleton is perfectly placed between these two bigger cities.
What's in Castleton?
Castleton has a Baptist chapel, which is a type of church. This chapel has an interesting history! Back in 1816, a meeting was held there where people decided to build the very first Welsh Baptist Chapel in Newport. That original building on Charles Street is now used for businesses, but the church meetings for Gateway Baptist are held nearby in Marshfield.
You can also find a petrol station in Castleton, which has a small cafe and a deli (a shop selling tasty food). Across the road from the petrol station is a place called the Coach and Horses. This is a popular spot that works as a pub, a restaurant, and even a hotel where people can stay the night.
Getting Around Castleton
The main road that goes through Castleton is the A48 dual carriageway. This is a busy road that helps people travel between Newport and Cardiff. There's also another important road nearby, the A48(M) motorway. This motorway passes just north of the village. It's a short link road that connects two parts of the M4 (Junction 29 and Junction 29A).
Long ago, there was a train station close by in Marshfield. You could catch a train from there to places like Newport and even all the way to London Paddington by going through the Severn Tunnel. You could also travel west to Cardiff and Fishguard Harbour. However, this train station closed in 1959. Today, the closest train stations are in Newport and Rogerstone.
