History of Sacred Heart Cathedral
Early Catholic Presence in San Angelo
Long ago, in the 1600s, Catholic priests visited the area where San Angelo is now. But the Catholic community didn't really get organized until Fort Concho was built in 1867. In 1874, a priest named Rev. Mathurin J. Pairier began visiting the area. He helped the Catholic people at Fort Concho, Ben Ficklin, and Santa Angela.
Building the First Church
A man named Bart J. DeWitt gave land for the church on September 22, 1874. This land is still known as "The Catholic Block." When San Angelo became the county seat in 1882, plans for a church began. The first church, called Immaculate Conception, was finished two years later. Father Pairier became its first full-time pastor. This stone church welcomed many different Catholic families. They came from Mexican, English, Irish, and German backgrounds.
Growth and New Buildings
The second pastor, Rev. John Sheehan, invited the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word from San Antonio. They came in 1888 to start a school for the parish. Later, in 1906, during Rev. Joseph Hoban's time, a new church building was being built. Part of the church's land was sold to help with this project. This new church was given the name Sacred Heart.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1961, Pope John XXIII created the Diocese of San Angelo. At that time, Sacred Heart Church was chosen to be the Cathedral Church. This means it became the main church for many Catholic parishes in West Texas. The current church building was officially dedicated on December 21, 1964.
