History of the Sacred Heart Cathedral
Early Catholic Presence
Catholic priests visited the area that is now San Angelo a long time ago. This was as early as the 1600s. But the Catholic community didn't really get organized until Fort Concho was built in 1867.
Founding the Parish
In 1874, a priest named Rev. Mathurin J. Pairier began visiting the area. He helped the Catholic people at Fort Concho, Ben Ficklin, and Santa Angela. A man named Bart J. DeWitt gave land for the church on September 22, 1874. This land is still known as "The Catholic Block."
Building the First Church
Plans for a church began after San Angelo became the main town in the county in 1882. The first church was finished two years later, in 1884. It was named Immaculate Conception. Rev. Pairier became the first full-time pastor for the church. This stone church welcomed many different Catholic families. They came from Mexican, English, Irish, and German backgrounds.
Growth and New Buildings
The second pastor, Rev. John Sheehan, invited the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to San Antonio. They came to start a school for the church in 1888. Later, in 1906, during the time of Rev. Joseph Hoban, a new church building was being built. Part of the church's land was sold to help with this new construction. This new church was named Sacred Heart.
Becoming a Cathedral
In 1961, Pope John XXIII created the Diocese of San Angelo. At that time, Sacred Heart was chosen to be the main church, or Cathedral Church. It is now the "mother church" for many Catholic churches in West Texas. The current church building was officially dedicated on December 21, 1964.
