Cauby Peixoto (born February 10, 1931 – died May 15, 2016) was a famous Brazilian singer. He had a long career, singing from the late 1940s until he passed away in 2016. People knew him for his deep, powerful voice and his unique, exciting stage style. He also had cool hairstyles! For a short time in the 1950s, he sang in the United States. There, he used the stage names Ron Coby or Coby Dijon.
Cauby's Early Life and Music Journey
Cauby Peixoto was born in Niterói, Brazil. He came from a very musical family. His dad played guitar, his mom played mandolin, and his brothers played trumpet and piano. His sister was also a singer! Cauby's uncle, Romualdo Peixoto, even helped bring the piano into samba music.
Cauby went to a special school in Niteroi where he sang in the church choir. He started his singing career by performing in talent shows on the radio.
First Steps in Music
In 1951, Cauby recorded his first album, "Saia Branca." But it didn't become popular right away. In 1952, Cauby moved to São Paulo. There, he met Di' Veras, a talent manager who would change his life. Di' Veras was great at marketing and helping artists become famous.
Di' Veras helped Cauby change his look and style. He also helped Cauby keep recording music. In 1955, Cauby had his first big hit in Brazil. It was a Portuguese version of the song "Blue Gardenia." This song was a hit for Nat King Cole, who was Cauby's biggest idol.

Singing in the United States
From 1955 to 1958, Cauby traveled back and forth to the United States. He was invited to tour there by Cardinal Spellman in 1955. While in the US, he recorded several albums with the Paul Weston Orchestra. He sang in English under the names Ron Coby (from 1955 to 1957) and Coby Dijon (from 1958 to 1959).
Cauby became very successful in the US. One of his songs reached the 5th spot on the most-played records list! He even sang with famous artists like Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich, Carmen Miranda, and Louis Armstrong. He also sang with his idol, Nat King Cole, and later dedicated an album to him in 2015.
Magazines like Time and Life called Cauby Peixoto the "Brazilian Elvis Presley" because of his exciting performances.
Rock and Roll in Brazil
In 1957, Cauby made history. He was the first Brazilian singer to record a rock song in Portuguese! The song was called Rock and Roll in Copacabana. He performed with a band called The Snakes. Even though he had a quick moment with rock music, Cauby mostly stuck to other styles after that.
Later Career and Collaborations
In the 1960s, Cauby mostly performed in nightclubs. When he returned to Brazil, he and his siblings bought a club called Drink. They focused more on managing the business for a while.
From the 1970s, Cauby often appeared on TV shows. He also performed in nightclubs in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In 1979, he toured with singer Zezé Gonzaga.
In 1980, to celebrate 25 years of his career, a special album called Cauby! Cauby! was released. Famous Brazilian composers wrote songs just for him on this album. One of the biggest hits from it was "Bastidores."
In 1982, Cauby recorded an album called Ângela & Cauby with another Brazilian singer, Ângela Maria. They sang many popular songs together. They continued to perform together throughout their careers.
In 2015, a documentary film about Cauby's life was released. It was called Cauby - I'd Start All Over Again. The film was very popular in Brazil.
Cauby Peixoto passed away on May 15, 2016, in São Paulo. He was 85 years old and had pneumonia. At the time, he was on tour with Ângela Maria, celebrating 60 years of their amazing music careers.
