Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo (born October 15, 1974) is a Spanish journalist, historian, and politician. She is a member of the People's Party. She has been a Member of the Congress of Deputies since May 21, 2019. She represented Barcelona and was the main spokesperson for her party in Congress until August 21, 2020. She has roots in Spain, France, and Argentina.
Before this, she was a Member of Congress for Madrid. This was during the 9th and 10th terms of the Cortes Generales. She also works as the Director of International Relations for FAES. She writes for the newspaper El Mundo.
About Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo
Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo was born in Madrid, Spain. Her father was French, and her mother was Argentine. Her father, Juan Illán Álvarez de Toledo y Giraud, was the 14th Marquess of Casa Fuerte. He fought in the French Resistance during World War II. She holds citizenship in Argentina, France, and Spain.
She spent her early childhood in London. At age seven, she moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Later, she returned to the United Kingdom for university. She studied Modern History at New College, Oxford, part of the University of Oxford. In 2000, she earned her PhD in Modern History. Her research was about a historical figure named Juan de Palafox.
She married businessman Joaquín Güell in 2001. They had two daughters together. They later divorced in January 2018. After finishing her PhD, she started working as an editor for the newspaper El Mundo in September 2000. She also appeared on a radio talk show called The Morning.
Her Political Journey
In 2006, Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo became the Chief of Staff for Ángel Acebes. He was a leader of the People's Party (PP). Her job was to advise him on political plans. She also managed his schedule and helped with his speeches.
She became a Spanish citizen in 2007. In the 2008 general election, she ran for the People's Party in Madrid. She won and became a Member of Parliament. She served as a Deputy Spokesperson for her party in parliament. She was re-elected in 2011.
In 2012, her father passed away. A year later, she inherited his title. She became the 15th Marchioness of Casa Fuerte.
In 2014, she wrote an article in the Financial Times. She expressed concern about the movement for Catalan independence. That same year, she launched a group called Free and Equal. This group aimed to defend the Spanish constitution. It promoted the idea of equality for all Spaniards. The group held events, including one in Madrid on September 11, 2014. She gave a speech there.
In 2016, she shared her thoughts on the Three Kings Parade in Madrid. She posted a tweet about it, which got a lot of attention. In March 2018, she wrote a newspaper article about a women's rights protest. In June 2018, after a change in government, she wrote an opinion piece. She confirmed she was still a People's Party member. However, she had voted for another party, Ciudadanos. She suggested the two parties should work together.
On March 15, 2019, it was announced she would run for Congress again. She was the top candidate for the PP in Barcelona. She won the election on April 28, 2019. She officially took office on May 21, 2019. In July, the party leader, Pablo Casado, named her the party's spokesperson in Congress. She held this important role until August 21, 2020.
