Discovering Cayley's Past
How Cayley Got Its Name
Cayley was named after a man named Hugh St. Quentin Cayley. He was a lawyer and also the person who published the Calgary Herald newspaper back in 1884. He also represented Calgary in the government of the Northwest Territories from 1886 to 1894.
What Was Here Before?
In the past, Cayley had at least seven large buildings called grain elevators. These were used to store grain from local farms. However, all of them have been taken down over time.
Cayley is also home to a Hutterite colony. A Hutterite colony is a community where people live and work together, often on farms, following a specific way of life. This colony also has its own school. In 2001, two girls from the Cayley Colony school were the first students from an Alberta colony school to take and pass provincial diploma exams and finish high school.
Cayley's Village Days
Cayley used to be a village. It officially became a village on August 4, 1904. But later, on June 1, 1996, it changed back to being a hamlet. This means it became a smaller, less formally governed community again.
