How Cayuga Got Its Name

The town of Cayuga was first planned on September 20, 1827. It was originally called Eugene Station. Some people also called it Osonimon, after a Native American chief.

Later, the town was renamed Cayuga. This name came from the village of Cayuga and Cayuga Lake in New York. An early settler, John Groenendyke, had moved from Cayuga County, New York. He came to Indiana in 1818 and then to the Vermillion County area in 1819.

The name "Cayuga" comes from an Iroquois word, Gwa-u-geh. This word means "the place of taking out." It refers to a portage, which is a place where boats or goods are carried over land between two bodies of water. A local story says the name also sounds like the horn of an old Ford Model T car.
