Exploring Ceabhaigh: A Small Scottish Island
Ceabhaigh is a very small island in the Outer Hebrides. These islands are off the northwest coast of Scotland. They are known for their beautiful, rugged landscapes and strong winds. Ceabhaigh is part of a group of islands that make up Lewis and Harris, one of the largest islands in Scotland.
Where is Ceabhaigh Located?
Ceabhaigh sits within a part of Loch Ròg called Loch Ròg nan Ear, which means "West Loch Roag." It's positioned between the mainland village of Breasclete and a larger island called Great Bernera. Just south of Ceabhaigh is another small island, Eilean Chearstaidh. A very tiny rock island, known as a skerry, called Sgeir nan Cleibh, lies a little to the north.
What is a Skerry?
A skerry is a very small, rocky island. It's often too small for people to live on or even for many plants to grow. Skerries are usually formed by erosion, where the sea wears away softer rock, leaving harder rock behind.
Why is Ceabhaigh Uninhabited?
Ceabhaigh is an uninhabited island, meaning no one lives there. Many small islands around Scotland are uninhabited. This is often because they are too small to support a community. They might not have fresh water, good soil for farming, or shelter from the weather. Ceabhaigh's small size and low elevation (only 20 meters at its highest point) likely make it a challenging place for people to live permanently.
