A Look Back at Cedar Hill's History
Cedar Hill has an interesting past. A famous person named Jo Byrns was born here on July 28, 1869. He grew up to become a very important leader in the United States government. He was even the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, which means he was in charge of many meetings and decisions in the U.S. Congress. The local elementary and high schools in Cedar Hill are named after him!
In the 1940s and 1950s, Cedar Hill was a bit bigger. It had about 700 people and around 10 stores. The town's economy mostly helped the farmers nearby. The main crop grown in the area was tobacco.
By the 1960s, farmers started growing different crops. More people also had cars, which made it easier to travel to Springfield. Springfield is the main town of the county, about nine miles away. Also around this time, new big highways like Interstate 24 and Interstate 65 were built. These highways took away much of the traffic that used to pass through Cedar Hill.
These changes caused the town's population to get smaller for a while. But now, Cedar Hill is working hard to grow and improve. The community is coming together to make it a better place to live.
In 2006, Jo Byrns Elementary School opened in Cedar Hill. This school serves students from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade.
In 2011, Cedar Hill was recognized by "Only In Your State." It was called one of the "teeny tiny towns" in Tennessee that make the South a beautiful place. The article said that good people live in these towns, and they are the kind of people you want to meet. You can read more about it here: Only In Your State article.
