Cedro is a small area, known as a barrio, located in the municipality of Carolina, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,943 people lived in Cedro. It covers an area of 1.9 square miles.
Cedro's History
Cedro has an interesting history, especially regarding how Puerto Rico became connected to the United States.
How Puerto Rico Joined the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it, like a state.
Counting Cedro's Residents
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. At that time, Cedro was called "Cedros barrio." The census found that 724 people lived there. Over the years, the population of Cedro has changed, as shown in the table below.
