The Central neighborhood is a cool part of Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States. It's located just south of the city's busy downtown area. Central is part of a bigger area called the Powderhorn community. It's important not to mix it up with the "Central community," which is a much larger area that includes downtown.

Exploring the Central Neighborhood
Central has clear borders. Lake Street is to its north. Chicago Avenue is to the east. 38th Street is to the south. Interstate 35W is to the west.
Who Represents Central?
The Central neighborhood is divided into two parts. This split affects how it's represented in the city council.
- The western part of Central is in Ward 8. This area is represented by Council Member Andrea Jenkins.
- The eastern part is in Ward 9. This area is represented by Council Member Jason Chavez.
A Look at Central's History
Most of the Central neighborhood was built between 1900 and 1930. It has always been a place where people from many different backgrounds live. African-American residents have been part of the community since the 1920s.
Central High School's Legacy
A famous school, Central High School, used to be located here. It closed in 1982 and was later taken down. A very famous musician, Prince, graduated from Central High School in 1976.
Central's Population and Diversity
In 2010, about 8,307 people lived in the Central neighborhood. It's a very diverse place!
- About 21.1% of residents were White.
- Around 25.1% were Black or African American.
- About 2.2% were American Indian or Alaska Native.
- Roughly 3.6% were Asian or Pacific Islander.
- A large group, about 44.3%, were Hispanic or Latino.
- About 3.4% identified as two or more races.
- Only 0.2% were of another race.
More families with children live in Central compared to the average for Minneapolis. Also, fewer people live alone here than in the rest of the city. The average household income in 2010 was $36,988.
