History of Central City
Central City was started in 1877. It got its name from Central City, Colorado, because a person from that town settled here. It began as a mining town during the exciting days of the Black Hills Gold Rush.
Miners sometimes had disagreements over where their mining claims ended. One time, a serious argument led to an explosion at the nearby Comstock Mine. This event caused a lot of trouble. Later, miners held a sit-down strike, which is when workers stop working but stay in their workplace. A group of soldiers, called a cavalry unit, from Fort Meade was called in to help solve the problem. This unit was led by a famous person named Seth Bullock.
