The Central Highlands is a special region in Tasmania, Australia. It is often called The Lake Country of Tasmania because it has so many beautiful lakes. This area is known for its stunning natural beauty, important conservation areas, and great fishing spots.

Nature's Beauty in the Central Highlands

The Central Highlands is a mountainous area in the middle of Tasmania. Many of its mountains are protected in special reserves. These include:
- Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park - located in the western part of the region.
- Walls of Jerusalem National Park - found in the central part.
- Central Plateau Conservation Area - situated in the eastern part.
Who Manages the Central Highlands?
The Central Highlands Council is the local government that looks after most of this highland region. They help manage the area and its communities.
Communities Built for Power
Years ago, Hydro Tasmania built power stations in the Central Highlands. They needed many workers for these projects. So, they created special communities for them to live in. Many of these workers were new migrants to Australia.
Tarraleah: A Historic Hydro Town
One important community was Tarraleah, started in 1934. It was a big town for workers building the Upper Derwent Power Development. A part of Tarraleah, called Ticklebelly Flat, was where married workers lived. This area has become famous in the history of Hydro Tasmania.
Fishing Paradise
The Central Highlands of Tasmania is famous for its amazing trout fishing lakes. Many people believe it has some of the best trout fly fishing in the world! In 2019, the region even hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships.

Many fly fishermen dream of visiting the Central Highlands. Some of the most popular places to fish include:

- Woods Lake

Tasmania's Heartland
For almost ten years, the Central Highlands Council has worked with two other councils, the Southern Midlands and the Northern Midlands. Together, they created a website called Tasmanian heartland. This portal promotes their combined areas.
Bushfest: An Outdoor Celebration
The Central Highlands Council also organizes an event called Bushfest every year. This festival started in 2014. It includes many outdoor activities like fishing, camping, hunting, and adventure sports. Around 4,000 people gather for Bushfest each year to enjoy the outdoors.

The Central Highlands is known as the 'Lakes Region' for a good reason. It has many beautiful lakes, which are a big draw for tourists. Some of these lakes include:
