Genesee is a small town located in Allegany County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,653 people lived there. The town is in the southwestern part of Allegany County, not far from the city of Olean.

History of Genesee
The first people to settle in the area that is now Genesee arrived around 1823. The town of Genesee was officially created in 1830. It was formed from a part of another town called Cuba.
At first, people in Genesee made money by cutting down trees from the large forests. Later, around 1890, they started producing oil, which became an important part of the local economy.
Geography and Location
Genesee covers about 94 square kilometers (36 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
The southern border of Genesee touches the state of Pennsylvania. To the west, it shares a border with the town of Portville. A main road, New York State Route 417, runs through the town from east to west.

Communities and Places in Genesee
Genesee is home to several smaller communities and interesting spots:
- Bowler – This is a small area located near Route 417 and the southern border of the town.
- Little Genesee – A small village, also known as a hamlet, found on Route 417 in the eastern part of Genesee.
- Little Genesee Creek – A natural stream that flows through the southeastern part of the town.
- Ceres – This hamlet is on Route 417, close to the Pennsylvania border. Part of Ceres is actually in Pennsylvania. The historic Ceres School building was added to a list of important places in 2010.
- Obi – A location in the northwestern part of the town, near Route 305.
- Sanford – You can find this spot on Route 417, southwest of Little Genesee.
