Cesar von Düben (born November 24, 1819 – died September 18, 1888) was a Swedish photographer, explorer, and writer. He was one of the first to use a special photography method called daguerreotype. Von Düben opened what might be the first commercial photographic studio in Portuguese Macau (now part of Macau). He also wrote many books about his travels.

Early Life

Cesar von Düben was born on November 24, 1819, in Stockholm, which was then part of Sweden-Norway. He was born a freiherr, which is a type of noble title, like a baron. Cesar was the fifth of six children. His father, Anders Gustaf von Düben, was a painter and a soldier. His mother, Carolina Maria von Düben, came from Swedish Pomerania (now part of Germany).

A Photographer's Journey

Cesar von Düben left Sweden in 1843. He spent about fifteen years traveling and learning photography. He worked in many places in Southeast Asia, including Mexico, Manila, Shanghai, Singapore, and Macau.

In the 1850s, he opened a photography studio in Macau. He advertised his new business in local newspapers. After Macau, he traveled to Hong Kong and opened another studio there. He often stayed longer than he planned in these cities. In 1857, he also worked as a photographer at the Hotel der Nederlanden. Cesar von Düben and Herman Husband were the first to bring daguerreotype photography to Shanghai.

Writing About the World

Besides photography, Cesar von Düben loved to travel and write. He traveled through India and wrote about his experiences there.

In 1871, he published a travel book. It was about his journeys to French Guiana, California, China, and the East Indies. Later, in 1886, he published another travel book called Memories from Java.

Family and Later Life

Cesar von Düben married a writer named Augusta Lillistråle on June 18, 1860. They had a daughter named Ingeborg, who was born in 1862.

Cesar von Düben passed away on September 18, 1888. He was 68 years old. He died in Skövde, a town in Västergötland, Sweden.
