Cestersover is a fascinating place in Warwickshire, England. It's known as a deserted village, which means it was once a busy community but is now empty. Today, it's part of the civil parish of Pailton.

The Story of Cestersover

Long ago, Cestersover was a small settlement, or hamlet, near a larger village called Monks Kirby. It had a watermill, a chapel, and was quite a big village for its time.

The Waver Family's Influence

A powerful family, the Wavers (sometimes called Wara), owned the land here. They had control of Cestersover from at least the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. The village's name, Cestersover, actually comes from "Thester Wara," which means "the Eastern Wara."

Why the Village Disappeared

The village was abandoned around the year 1467. This happened when a man named Henry Waver, who had become very rich as a fabric seller (a draper) in London, was given special permission. He was allowed to rebuild his old family home, the manor, with cool features like turrets and crenelations (the battlements you see on castles). He was also allowed to enclose 500 acres of land. This meant he fenced off a huge area, which likely forced the villagers to leave their homes and farms.

What You Can See Today

Even though Cestersover is a deserted village, you can still find clues about its past. Today, you can see the remains of an old moat (a ditch that used to surround the manor) and parts of the original manor house. These ruins help us imagine what life was like in this village centuries ago.
