Chaffin's Bluff facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Chaffin's Bluff is a historic spot in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. It sits on the north side of the James River, across from Drewry's Bluff. Both bluffs were important defense points for the river below Richmond. During the American Civil War, the Confederate army built strong defenses here. This was because the bluffs are at a big bend in the river, about eight miles south of Richmond.

History of Chaffin's Bluff

Early Defenses and Battles

Chaffin's Bluff played a key role in defending Richmond during the American Civil War. In 1862, the Union army tried to capture Richmond by water. Their warships, including the famous ironclad USS Monitor, sailed up the James River.

However, they could not get past the strong Confederate defenses at Chaffin's Bluff and Drewry's Bluff. This battle, called the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, happened on May 15, 1862. The Union forces were forced to turn back.

Chaffin's Farm and Fort Harrison

Chaffin's Bluff was very close to a place called Chaffin's Farm. This farm was later renamed Fort Harrison. Both locations were vital for protecting Richmond.

In 1864, more fighting took place here. On August 15, 1864, Union forces tried to attack the defenses near Chaffin's Bluff. But Confederate soldiers stopped their advance.

Another major battle happened on September 30, 1864, at Fort Harrison (Chaffin's Farm). The Union army had captured Fort Harrison the day before. Confederate General Robert E. Lee led a strong counterattack to try and take it back. However, the Union forces successfully defended the fort.

This battle marked the end of major Union attempts to capture Richmond from the north side of the James River. After this, the Confederates built new defenses closer to Richmond. The Union army also built their own siege lines to surround the Confederate capital.

Historical Maps and Records

In 1881, Jefferson Davis, who was the president of the Confederate States, published a book. It was called Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. A map in his book showed Chaffin's Bluff as "Chapin Bluff." It was marked as 8.5 miles down the James River from Richmond.

Today, Drewry's Bluff is part of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. It is known as the Fort Darling unit.
