Chang Chen (born on October 14, 1976) is a famous actor from Taiwan. He is well-known for his roles in many popular movies. Some of his most famous films include A Brighter Summer Day (1991), Happy Together (1997), and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). He also starred in The Assassin (2015) and The Soul (2021). For his acting in The Soul, he won the award for Best Leading Actor at the 58th Golden Horse Awards.

Chang Chen's Acting Journey
Chang Chen started acting when he was very young. A director named Edward Yang chose him to star in the long and highly praised film A Brighter Summer Day. This movie won a special award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. After this first film, Chang Chen worked part-time at a film company for two years until he finished high school.
Early Film Roles
One of Chang Chen's first movies was Happy Together (1997), directed by Wong Kar-wai. He became very famous for playing "Dark Cloud" in the 2000 movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This film was directed by Ang Lee. He also appeared in Wong Kar-wai's film 2046 (2004).
Working with Top Directors
Chang Chen later starred with Shu Qi in Hou Hsiao-hsien's movie Three Times (2005). This film was shown at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and won many awards, including Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year. Chang Chen was also nominated for Best Leading Actor for his role in Three Times.
In 2006, he was nominated again for Best Leading Actor for his role in The Go Master. This movie was about the life of a famous Go game player named Wu Qingyuan. The next year, Chang Chen acted in his first Korean movie, Breath, which also competed at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
Big Historical Movies
Chang Chen then starred in the huge historical war movie Red Cliff (2008-2009). In this film, he played the warlord Sun Quan. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He also appeared in the 2012 historical film The Last Supper and the 2013 kungfu movie The Grandmaster.
In 2014, Chang Chen was the main actor in the action film Brotherhood of Blades. This movie was very successful and well-liked by critics. He received his third nomination for Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards.
Chang Chen worked again with director Hou Hsiao-hsien and co-star Shu Qi in the 2015 martial arts film The Assassin. This movie was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
Recent Projects and International Roles
In 2017, Chang Chen played the main character in the action movie Mr. Long. This film was chosen to compete at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. That same year, he returned for the second Brotherhood of Blades movie.
Chang Chen was also a judge at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
In 2021, he played Dr. Wellington Yueh in the big science fiction movie Dune. This film was shown at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. In the same year, he won the Best Leading Actor award at the 58th Golden Horse Awards for his role in the mystery film The Soul. This was his first win after being nominated three times before.
Chang Chen was a judge again at the 59th Golden Horse Awards in 2022. In June 2023, he was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is a very important group in the film world.
