Lin Li-hui (born 16 April 1976), known as Shu Qi, is a famous actress and model from Hong Kong and Taiwan. She is considered one of the most successful Taiwanese actresses ever. Shu Qi has won many awards, including three Hong Kong Film Awards and two Golden Horse Awards.
She has worked with director Hou Hsiao-hsien on three films: Millennium Mambo (2001), Three Times (2005), and The Assassin (2015). Shu Qi has also starred in popular movies like If You Are the One (2008), A Beautiful Life (2011), Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), and Gone with the Bullets (2014).
Forbes magazine has often listed Shu Qi among the top celebrities in China. She was 18th in 2013, 23rd in 2014, 32nd in 2015, 48th in 2017, and 90th in 2019.

Early Life and Career Beginnings
Shu Qi was born in Xindian, which is now part of New Taipei City, Taiwan. When she was 17, she moved to Hong Kong to start a career in movies. She began working with Hong Kong film producer Manfred Wong.
Acting Career Highlights
Early Roles and Recognition (1996–1999)

Shu Qi quickly became known for her acting skills. She appeared in Hong Kong films such as Portland Street Blues (1998) and City of Glass (1998). She also starred in the popular movie Gorgeous (1999). These roles helped her become a mainstream actress. She also worked with director Stanley Kwan in The Island Tales (1999) and Hou Hsiao-hsien in Millennium Mambo (2001).
International Films and Awards (2002–2009)
In 2002, Shu Qi starred in the French film The Transporter. This was her first big role in a movie aimed at the American market. She also appeared in The Foliage (2004), a romance film. For her role in The Foliage, she won the Best Actress award at the 13th Shanghai Film Critics Awards.
Shu Qi worked with director Hou Hsiao-hsien again in Three Times (2005). This film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Shu Qi won the Best Actress award at the Golden Horse Awards for her performance in Three Times. In 2006, she starred in the third movie of the My Wife Is a Gangster series, alongside Korean actor Lee Beom-soo.
She also starred with Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro in the crime drama Confession of Pain (2006). In 2008, she had a small but memorable part in the American romantic comedy New York, I Love You. Shu Qi was a jury member at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival in 2008. She was also on the jury for the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009.
In 2009, she received the Best Actress award at the Huabiao Awards. This was for her role in the romantic comedy If You Are the One, directed by Feng Xiaogang. This movie was the highest-grossing Chinese film of that year.
Recent Successes (2010–Present)
Shu Qi starred in Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013). This movie was directed by Stephen Chow and was based on the classic Chinese story Journey to the West. The film became the highest-grossing Chinese movie at the time.
In 2015, Shu Qi reunited with director Hou Hsiao-hsien for his first wuxia film, The Assassin. She played the main character. The film received excellent reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. Shu Qi won the Best Actress award at the Asian Film Festival for her role. The movie was chosen to represent Taiwan at the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. In the same year, she starred in the popular film Mojin: The Lost Legend. This movie was based on the adventure novel series Ghost Blows Out the Light.
In 2016, Shu Qi, Feng Shaofeng, and Victoria Song starred in the Chinese version of My Best Friend's Wedding. She also appeared in the fantasy comedy The Village of No Return in 2017. In 2017, Shu Qi starred in Stephen Fung's The Adventurers with Jean Reno and Andy Lau.
Shu Qi appeared in the science fiction film Shanghai Fortress in 2019. In 2023, she was a jury member at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. In June 2024, Shu Qi was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She starred in Bi Gan's science fiction detective film Resurrection (2025), which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Modeling and Other Work
From 2006 to 2009, Shu Qi was the global spokesperson for Kenzo's perfume Flower by Kenzo. She also worked as a spokesperson for the fashion brand Shiatzy Chen.
Since 2008, Shu Qi has been a brand ambassador for Frederique Constant in Asia. In 2009, she worked with Frederique Constant and the Paint-a-Smile Foundation to repaint murals at the Beijing Children's Hospital.
Shu Qi was also the Asian ambassador for Emporio Armani's Fall/Winter 2010 collection. She is also the brand spokesperson for Bulgari in China. Since 2023, she has been a Global Brand Ambassador for Bulgari. In February 2023, Shu Qi became a Global Spokesperson for the American fashion house Michael Kors. In March 2023, Tom Ford Beauty announced Shu Qi as their brand ambassador for Fragrance and Make-up in China and Asia-Pacific. In October 2023, the Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta announced Shu Qi as their Global Brand Ambassador. In September 2024, Tom Ford Beauty named Shu Qi as its global ambassador. In January 2025, the American beauty brand Estée Lauder named Shu Qi as its global spokesperson for skincare.
Personal Life
Shu Qi married Hong Kong actor and director Stephen Fung in 2016. They first met in 1997 on the set of the movie Bishonen. They were friends for 20 years and dated for four years before getting married.
