Charles Crawford (born December 27, 1866 – died December 28, 1945) was an officer in the United States Army and also an author. He was involved in important events like the Spanish–American War, served in the Philippines, and fought in World War I.
Growing Up and School
Charles Crawford was born in Coshocton, Ohio. He went to the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point, and finished there in 1889. One of his classmates at West Point later became a famous army general named Charles Dudley Rhodes. Later, in 1912, Crawford also graduated from the Army War College.
Army Career
Crawford started his army career as a second lieutenant. From 1889 to 1895, he served on the United States frontier. During this time, he worked as military police in Oklahoma City and helped the U.S. government with American Indian tribes. He even helped create an Apache Indian Company in the 10th Infantry.
During the Spanish–American War in 1898, Crawford took part in the Battle of San Juan Hill. He was praised for being very brave during this battle.
From 1903 to 1907, he taught at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He taught at the Infantry and Cavalry School and the Army Staff College. Crawford also served in the Philippines several times, first from 1890 to 1902 and again from 1909 to 1911.
From 1913 to 1916, Crawford worked on the General Staff of the U.S. Army. After that, he was in the Panama Canal Zone until 1917.
World War I Service
During World War I, Crawford became a brigadier general. He was part of the American Expeditionary Force, which was the name for the U.S. troops sent to Europe. He led the 6th Infantry Brigade, which was part of the 3rd Infantry Division. They fought in the Second Battle of the Marne, a very important battle.
In 1919, Crawford retired from the army because of health issues.
Later Life and Books
After retiring, Charles Crawford lived in Paola, Kansas. He passed away on December 28, 1945, in a car accident and was buried in Paola.
He was a Presbyterian. He was married to E.M. Miller, who passed away in 1919. They did not have any children.
Besides his military career, Crawford was also an author. He wrote two books: Six Months with the Sixth Brigade and Restarting Economic Theory.
