Charles H. Clausen (born September 22, 1842 – died August 15, 1922) was a brave American soldier. He fought in the American Civil War, a very important time in American history. Charles Clausen earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive in the United States. He received this special award for his actions during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on May 12, 1864. He was officially given the award on June 25, 1892.

Charles Clausen's Early Life and Service
Charles H. Clausen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 22, 1842. When the Civil War began, he joined the army. He first enlisted in the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry. With this unit, he took part in battles near Washington, D.C. and along the Potomac River in Virginia.
Joining the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry
After serving his first three months, Charles Clausen joined a new unit. On August 21, 1861, he became a first sergeant in the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry. A first sergeant is a very important leader who helps manage the soldiers in a company. He was later promoted to this rank again.
Bravery at Spotsylvania Court House
While serving as a first sergeant, Clausen was involved in the fierce Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia. It was during this battle that he showed incredible bravery. His actions earned him the prestigious Medal of Honor. Even though he was wounded during this battle, he did not give up.
Returning to Duty as Captain
After recovering from his injuries, Charles Clausen returned to his unit. In October 1864, he was promoted to captain. A captain leads a company of soldiers. He even became a commander. However, his injuries from the battle were severe. On February 10, 1865, he had to leave the army because of them.
Later Life and Legacy
Charles H. Clausen passed away on August 15, 1922. He was buried in the Mount Peace Cemetery in Philadelphia. His bravery and service during the American Civil War are remembered through his Medal of Honor.
