Charles William Miller (born June 2, 1939 – died June 4, 1980) was an American musician. He was famous for playing the saxophone and flute. Charles was a key member of the funk band War. He even sang lead vocals on their big hit song, "Low Rider" (1975).

About Charles Miller

Charles Miller was born in Olathe, Kansas. When he was two, his family moved to Los Angeles, California. They later settled in Long Beach, California. Charles's father was also a musician.

Charles loved music from a young age. He played many instruments like the saxophone, flute, and clarinet (these are called woodwinds). He also played piano and guitar. He was part of school bands and orchestras.

For a while, Charles was more focused on football than music. But in 1967, he got an injury while playing football in college. After that, he focused more on his music.

Before joining War, Charles played with other groups. He recorded albums with a band called Señor Soul. He also played with famous musicians like Ray Charles. Charles toured around, playing music with different bands.

Joining the Band War

In the summer of 1969, Charles was in Hollywood. He heard some musicians practicing and decided to join them. This group became known as the Night Shift.

Charles Miller was playing with the Night Shift when Eric Burdon and Lee Oskar came to watch. Lee Oskar joined the band on harmonica. That's when their special sound came together. Charles's saxophone and Lee Oskar's harmonica blended perfectly.

The Song "Low Rider"

You can hear Charles Miller's deep voice on the War song "Low Rider". Many people say he was the main songwriter for this famous tune.

"Low Rider" was recorded in 1975. Since then, many artists have used parts of the song in their own music. For example, Flo Rida used it for his song "G.D.F.R.". You might also recognize "Low Rider" from movies like Up in Smoke and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. It was even the theme song for the TV show George Lopez.

His Passing

Charles Miller passed away on June 4, 1980. At the time, he was living in Hollywood with his wife, Eddy Miller, and his children, Annette, Laurian, Donald, and Mark.
