Charlie Cameron's Early Life
Charlie Cameron was born in Mount Isa, Queensland. He comes from an Aboriginal Australian family, with ties to the Lardil and Waanyi peoples. He went to primary school on Mornington Island, Queensland. Later, he moved to Brisbane to attend Marist College Ashgrove.
Sports Before AFL
As a schoolboy, Charlie was a talented athlete. He played baseball, rugby union, and rugby league at high levels. He also played a few games of Australian rules football while at Marist College. For six months, he was part of the Brisbane Lions Talent Academy. However, he decided to leave football to focus on rugby. After finishing school in 2011, Charlie moved with his family to Newman, Western Australia. His brother, Jarrod Cameron, also became a professional Australian rules footballer.
Path to the AFL
While living in Newman, Charlie was convinced to play for the local football team, the Newman Saints. He started playing club football for the first time in 2012. He played so well that he was invited to play for the Swan Districts Football Club. He played three games for their Colts team.
Joining Swan Districts
In 2013, Charlie had his first pre-season with Swan Districts. He impressed the coaches and earned a spot in the senior team for the first game of the 2013 WAFL season. He also represented Western Australia at the 2013 AFL Under 18 Championships. Even though he had only played about 30-40 games of Australian rules football in total, his talent was clear. This led to him being picked by Adelaide in the rookie draft.
AFL Career Highlights
Playing for Adelaide
Charlie showed great form in the SANFL (South Australian National Football League) early in his first season. Because of this, he was moved up to the senior team. He made his AFL debut in Round 9, 2014, against Collingwood. In that game, he kicked a goal and helped set up another. He played seven AFL games in 2014, scoring nine goals. He even kicked three goals in one game against Fremantle. At the end of the season, he won the Crows' Mark Bickley Emerging Talent Award.
Rising Star Recognition
In 2015, Charlie became a regular player for Adelaide. He played 22 games, scoring 29 goals and helping with 17 others. He kicked a career-best four goals against the Gold Coast in Round 17. He also kicked the winning goal in Adelaide's final game against the Western Bulldogs. Charlie was nominated for the 2015 AFL Rising Star award. This was for his great game against the Brisbane Lions in Round 13.
Moving to Brisbane
In Round 9, 2017, Charlie had an amazing game against the Brisbane Lions. He kicked four goals in the third quarter, including one where he ran with two bounces. He also took a fantastic high mark. The next week, he kicked three goals against Fremantle in a big win. In October 2017, Charlie asked to be traded to a team in Queensland. He wanted to play for Brisbane, even though he was still under contract with Adelaide. He was officially traded to Brisbane during the trade period.
Playing for Brisbane
Charlie quickly became a key player for the Brisbane Lions. He helped them reach the finals from 2019 to 2022. He became known for his fierce efforts in front of goal. A memorable moment was in the 2022 AFL semi-final against the Melbourne Demons. In the final minutes, he marked the ball near the boundary line. He then kicked the goal, helping the Lions win against the reigning champions.
Facing Challenges
In 2022, Charlie, like some other players, sadly faced unfair treatment. This incident was investigated by the AFL's integrity unit. In the 2023 AFL Grand Final, Charlie kicked a goal that put the Lions ahead of Collingwood with only minutes left. However, Brisbane eventually lost that close game.
Premiership Success
In 2024, Charlie made an "easy decision" to sign a new contract. This means he plans to finish his career with the Lions. Charlie was a part of the Brisbane Lions team that won the 2024 AFL Grand Final. He kicked a goal in their 60-point victory over the Sydney Swans. This was his third Grand Final appearance.
